Let's be frank about this. The purpose of your resume is to get you an interview. It is very unlikely to get you a job without first attending an interview. Because of this we have to tackle the job of writing a resume in a very particular fashion.

People search online continuously for example resumes thinking that by cribbing or copying someone else's work will achieve the end they want. It may - but it is far more likely not to. The reason for this is that you spend most of your effort adapting the sample resume to your own situation rather than writing and designing a unique resume that will sell you into the market place. My advice to you is to start from scratch - ALWAYS!

OK, the video was a bit of fun! But it contains basic truths which we need to exploit. So where do we go from here? There are a number of broad questions or heading that must be considered.

1. Where are you starting from?
   • Are you employed - and if so what is your current job?
   • Are you unemployed, and if so what was your last job if you have ever had one?
   • Are you a college graduate entering the workplace for the first time?
2. Where are you going?
   • Are you just seeking to advance in your current career?
   • Are you jumping ship and changing career?
   • Are you looking to change the way you work - for example to move from part time to full time work?
   • What are your longer term ambitions - your ultimate goal?
3. Who are you? Having rehearsed the outline objectives above this is where the work starts and it's the part of resume writing and CV writing which is often given far less attention than it deserves. Below we will start to examine ourselves in great detail so that we have enough information to write a realistic and very positive assessment of ourselves.

Draw up the following headings:

Teenage years
College and University
Employment
Leisure, Sports and Hobbies
Family
Other

Transferable Skills

Now under each heading - there may be other headings which will be appropriate for you so feel free to add them - make a list of all your achievements. At this point no achievement is too small or insignificant. Just list it. We can filter out and adapt these things later. But this is free thinking required here, without any limitations. You need to learn who you really are, and you are far more successful than you realise. With this in mind, let's begin to populate the list.

Do not limit yourself by what you think is relevant to your new job. It is too early in the process to be doing that. At this stage everything counts and should be listed.

Teenage Years Achievements (probably only relevant if you are under 25, but still worth doing at this stage)
Scout (or guide) leader.
School basketball captain and led team to win the schools league (or whatever).
Assistant teacher for the Children's group at church.

Anything you did as a teenager which showed a bit of spirit and character - list it here.

College or University Achievements
Majored in Mathematics, Humanities, Languages etc.
Qualified as .......
Captain of the Debating Society
Tutored some struggling fellow students to pass their exams.
Played in the college soccer team.

Include anything over and above your academic achievements which demonstrate that you are a contributor to the team effort.

Employment Achievements
At ABC Inc. I was responsible for decreasing cost of sales by 5%.
At ABC Inc. I was able to increase departmental output by 10% with a simple reorganization.
At DEF Inc. I led a sales team to be the top team in the state reaching sales turnover of $25m in 2011.

In other words think hard about what you have achieved in your working life - even if it was only in a holiday job or student employment. Don't sell yourself short. Anything you have achieved, make a note of it here.

Leisure, Sports and Hobbies

Remember that we are looking for achievements, so list any positions you have held or competitions you have won either individually or as part of a team. And if you have helped to change things for the better as part of the administration of any of these activities, then list those as well.

Family Achievements
If you are a mother about to return to work then raising your family this far is no mean achievement. Perhaps you were a home educator of one or more of your children, or you taught them a musical instrument to an examined standard. There is so much achievement in family life which goes unrecognized.

Other Achievements
List anything which doesn't fit in the categories above.

Transferable Skills

Here make a list of all the skills you have - not just those you think your future employer might be interested in, but everything. For example:

Great cook
Expert in MS Office, particularly Word and Excel
Good organizer of people
Leadership skills
Able to make reasoned decisions
Good communicator - both written and oral
Pro active
Good negotiator (think about how you do this at home with the children!)
Qualified basketball coach
Skilled pianist
etc.

Having completed these tasks - DO NOTHING! You need to sleep on this list for a couple of days and you will be amazed what things come to you that you should have already included. So don't rush into writing your resume without this measured delay.

Writing Your Resume

Now this is where the rubber hits the road. If you get it right you will be invited for interview - but if not .....

You have GOT to sell yourself. You have GOT to stand out from the crowd. You have GOT to make the interviewer want to meet you. Why? because you sound so interesting that they/he or she just must. It's as simple as that.

So now it's up to you. Now you are ready to see an example resume and you use it as a style sheet, but filling it with the information you have researched about yourself.

The truth is that the resume of a business analyst is no different in construction to that of any other profession. The secret is to place yourself in the seat of the person reading your finished resume. How do you feel about it? Do you think you sound interesting and would you want to meet you regardless of whether you are offered the job? Do you sound accomplished and able without being conceited? Remember that most Human Resources departments have heard all the boasts before and they cut little ice. It is much more important to sound genuine and interesting rather than a competitor on some television business game show.

The way you write in your case will be as important as what you write. As a business analyst you should be clear and concise and able to transmit easily your ideas and purposes to others. If your daily emphasis is for figures rather than for prose then you may need some help, but that should only come after you have done your research and data collection. The resume writing industry has made a real meal of this subject with endless discussion and debate about whether the chronological resume is superior to the functional resume and when it's appropriate to use a combined resume or a targeted one. To my mind this is all illusionary and of little interest to the human resources robot who will process the thing on receipt! Actually that is not fair! Not all potential employers can be cast as robots - but you know what I mean I'm sure.

The best resume or CV to write is the one that makes the best job of selling you to the reader. Your competition is other resumes and CVs - not the people behind them, but the written resumes and CVs themselves. This is all the reader has to go on and it is in the reading of them that the candidates for interview will be selected, and by default others rejected.

The long and the short of it is not to become too hung up on what resume format to adopt, but to make sure that what you write does the job you want it to do, which is to grab the undivided attention of the reader. So how is this done? At this juncture I would recommend that you make a point of visiting the page How to Write a Resume soon. You don't have to do that right now though.

There are two things that you need to concentrate on when designing and writing your resume. These can be summarized as:

1. Interest - You MUST make yourself interesting. Remember that you will be employed by a person and you will be working with other people - living with them shoulder to shoulder for eight hours or more a day. The person to be employed will be a human being not a machine, so it is essential that you sound more interesting and engaging than the rest of the motley crew who have sent in their job interview applications.

There is nothing remotely interesting in a page full of qualifications obtained and job appointments filled over the intervening period since you first entered the job market! MUCH more than this is required - see this example resume. Note how interest is added with a photograph and a chatty introduction. This is where you make the sale. If you don't do it in this paragraph you are sunk. Spend time on this. Craft it lovingly. Have friends and family read it and comment on it. The question that must underpin everything you write in this short introduction is this - "Would I want to meet this person even if it weren't for a job interview?" That is what you are aiming for and it has to drive your resume writing efforts.

2. Relevance - Having made yourself interesting and magnetically fascinating, you must now dress up your experience and qualifications in such a way that they are wholly relevant to the job being offered. But as long as you have made the sale as shown above, you can be more clinical about the way this is done. Lists are appropriate here with a little expansion - but see again the sample resume mentioned above.
